Netflix Features Most Subscribers Never Use — Gaming Is Number One
Thirteen useful Netflix extras I think are worth trying, starting with the games most people forget they already pay for.
The best hidden Netflix feature is not a setting
I used Netflix for years mainly as a place to watch films and boxsets. The surprise was discovering that one of the best parts of the membership sits outside the usual watch screen: the games catalogue. That is the feature I would try first. The rest of this guide covers the smaller controls I genuinely find useful, from calming autoplay previews to checking which devices are still signed in.
The five Netflix features I would try first
Start with Netflix Games. It adds something genuinely different to the subscription and costs nothing extra. After that, I would turn off preview autoplay, clean up Continue Watching, check signed-in devices and set up Smart Downloads before travelling.
01 Netflix's Most Useful Hidden Features at a Glance
I have ranked gaming first because it adds a separate form of entertainment rather than simply changing a menu. The other features are smaller, but several remove annoyances I notice every time I use Netflix.
| Feature | Best for | Where you will usually find it | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Netflix games | The biggest extra included with membership | Netflix app, app stores and selected TV experiences | Compatibility and catalogue vary |
| Preview autoplay | A quieter home screen | Manage Profiles | Changed per profile |
| Subtitle appearance | Clearer, more comfortable reading | Profile settings or player controls | Options vary by device |
| Playback speed | Slower dialogue or faster recaps | Player speed control | Not supported everywhere |
| Smart Downloads | Flights, trains and patchy Wi-Fi | Mobile app settings | Not on the ad-supported plan |
| Continue Watching clean-up | Removing abandoned titles | Title menu or Viewing activity | May take time to sync |
| Manage Access and Devices | Account security | Account page | Recent devices can take time to appear |
| Profile PIN | Privacy and household boundaries | Manage Profiles | Not a replacement for account security |
| Profile Transfer | Moving to another account | Account profile settings | Some profiles are not eligible |
| Audio and language search | Accessibility and language learning | Search and Browse by Languages | Availability differs by title |
| Data and quality controls | Sharper video or lower data use | Playback settings | Plan and hardware still matter |
| Moments | Saving memorable scenes | Mobile player and My Netflix | Not available for every type of video |
| Remind Me and My Netflix | Tracking releases and saved titles | Title pages and My Netflix | Layout varies during roll-outs |
02 13 Netflix Features Most Subscribers Never Use, Ranked
Play the games already included with Netflix
This is the Netflix feature I think most subscribers overlook. It is not a token collection of quizzes or interactive episodes; it is a substantial games library included with the membership. Netflix's current catalogue lists more than 120 mobile games, without adverts, extra fees or in-app purchases.
I like it because the games are easy to dip into without making another monthly commitment. I can start something on my phone, play for twenty minutes and put it down without being pushed towards coins, gems or a season pass. Some titles are small puzzle games, but others are full releases that would normally be sold separately.
Red Dead Redemption is the one I would show somebody who still thinks Netflix Games is a novelty. It feels like a proper console-scale adventure squeezed onto a phone. Dead Cells: Netflix Edition is my pick when I want quick action, although it is dangerously easy to turn “one run” into five. For something calmer, I like Storyteller because its little fairy-tale puzzles are clever without demanding a huge time commitment. I also keep Football Manager 26 Mobile installed for longer sessions when I want a game with more depth.
The catches are mostly practical. Games are not shown on Kids profiles, individual titles have maturity ratings, and compatibility varies by phone, tablet and game. Netflix has also introduced selected games that can be played on supported televisions using a phone as the controller, but that experience is not available on every account or device.
Open the Netflix mobile app and look for the Games shortcut or Mobile Games row. Choose a title, install it through the App Store or Google Play, then sign in with your Netflix account and select the profile that should hold the save. On a supported television, look for a Games tab or game row and follow the on-screen controller instructions.
Turn off preview autoplay
This is one of the first settings I change on a fresh profile. The trailer that starts while I am still reading a synopsis makes browsing feel rushed, and it is even more irritating late at night. Netflix lets you disable those previews without turning off the separate next-episode autoplay setting.
Once it is off, the home screen feels noticeably calmer. It is a tiny change, but it is one I notice every time I browse.
Open Manage Profiles, choose the profile and turn off Autoplay Previews. You may need to reload Netflix on another device before the change appears.
Make subtitles easier to read
I prefer subtitles with a small dark background rather than oversized text. They stay readable against bright scenes without covering half the picture. Netflix can change the size, font, shadow, background and colour, although the exact controls depend on the device.
Even when I am not watching a foreign-language title, I use subtitles for quiet dialogue, strong accents and late-night viewing when turning up the television would wake everybody else.
On the web, open your Account page, select a profile and choose Subtitle appearance. Some televisions also offer Size and Style controls in the player.
Change the playback speed
Playback speed is not just for racing through a slow programme. Slowing a scene down can help when dialogue is fast or you are watching in a language you are learning. A slightly quicker speed is handy for recaps, familiar stand-up specials or something you are rewatching for background comfort.
The control appears on supported web browsers and in the Android, iPhone and iPad apps. It is not available in every viewing set-up, including some casting and ad-supported browser situations.
Pause the programme, select the speed icon and choose the pace you want. If no speed icon appears, that device or viewing method does not support it.
Let Smart Downloads prepare your next journey
Before a long train journey, I would rather spend two minutes checking downloads at home than trust the on-board Wi-Fi. Smart Downloads can remove a finished episode and fetch the next one automatically, while Downloads for You fills a chosen amount of storage with recommendations.
I normally use Download Next Episode because it is predictable. Downloads for You is more of a lucky dip, but it has rescued me when I forgot to choose anything in advance. Smart Downloads is not available on Netflix's ad-supported plan.
In the mobile app, open My Netflix, tap the profile name, choose App Settings and then Smart Downloads. Set a storage allowance before enabling Downloads for You.
Remove abandoned shows from Continue Watching
I clear this row every few weeks. A series I abandoned after nine minutes should not sit beside the programmes I am genuinely watching, and removing it makes the home screen feel less cluttered.
For a deeper clean, I use Viewing activity in the profile settings. Hiding a title there can also stop it influencing the row and recommendations, although changes may not appear instantly on every device.
Open the title menu in Continue Watching and choose Remove from Continue Watching or Remove from Row. On older apps, use Viewing activity from a browser.
Check every device using your account
Netflix's Manage Access and Devices page is more useful than the old all-or-nothing sign-out option. It shows recently active devices, the latest profile used and recent streaming activity, then lets you sign out a specific television, phone or browser.
It is worth checking after a hotel stay, house move or visit to somebody else's home. An unfamiliar device does not always mean your password has been stolen, but it should not be ignored.
Open the Netflix Account page and choose Manage Access and Devices. Sign out anything you no longer recognise or use, then change your password if the activity looks suspicious.
Protect a profile with a PIN
A profile PIN is useful for more than parental controls. It can stop flatmates or family members from accidentally using your profile, changing your recommendations and filling Continue Watching with programmes you have never seen.
It also adds a small privacy barrier if several people use the same television. It does not secure the whole Netflix account, so you still need a strong account password and sensible device management.
Open Manage Profiles, choose the profile and select Profile Lock. The account password may be required before you can add or change the PIN.
Move your profile instead of starting again
When somebody leaves a shared account, they do not necessarily have to abandon years of recommendations. Profile Transfer can copy an eligible profile to a new or existing account, carrying across viewing history, My List, settings, recommendations and supported game progress.
It is not available for every profile. Kids profiles, PIN-protected profiles and certain extra-member profiles have restrictions. Remove a profile PIN before attempting a transfer.
In a browser, open the Account page, select the relevant profile and choose Profile Transfer. Follow the prompts for a new account, existing account or eligible extra-member slot.
Search by audio, subtitles and original language
Netflix search understands more than titles and actors. You can search for terms such as “Audio Description in English”, a language or a broad genre. On the web, Browse by Languages is particularly useful for finding films with a specific original language, dub or subtitle option.
Audio description adds spoken narration of visual details such as actions, expressions, clothing and scene changes. It was designed for blind and partially sighted viewers, but it can also help when you need to follow a programme without staring at the screen.
Use Netflix Search for a language or “Audio Description”, or open Browse by Languages on the Netflix website. During playback, open Audio and Subtitles to see the choices for that title.
Choose between sharper video and lower data use
Netflix normally handles quality automatically, but the profile's data-use setting can quietly hold it back. If a compatible plan, screen and connection should be delivering HD or 4K but the picture remains soft, check whether playback has been limited to a lower setting.
The opposite is useful on a capped mobile connection. Reducing data use can make a limited allowance last longer, although the picture will be less detailed. No account setting can force 4K when the plan, title, device or connection does not support it.
From a browser, open the Account page, choose a profile and select Playback settings. Use Auto or High for the best supported quality, or a lower option to reduce data use.
Save and share a favourite scene with Moments
Moments turns the “remember that scene?” conversation into something you can actually revisit. On supported mobile apps, you can create a short clip, save it and find it again inside My Netflix. Saved Moments can also be shared with friends or family.
There are sensible restrictions. You cannot create Moments from live events, trailers, downloads or games, and availability can depend on the app version and title.
While watching in the mobile app, open the player controls and look for the option to clip or save a Moment. Your saved clips appear in My Netflix.
Use Remind Me and My Netflix as a proper watch hub
My List is useful, but it can become a graveyard of good intentions. The newer My Netflix area brings together saved titles, Continue Watching, reminders, things you have watched and other profile activity in one place, depending on your device and interface version.
For an unreleased series, film or live event, use Remind Me. When it becomes available, Netflix may notify you and add it to My List. It is a much better system than hoping you remember a date from a trailer.
Open an upcoming title and select Remind Me. Use My Netflix to review reminders, My List, Continue Watching and recent profile activity.
03 Which Netflix Settings Work Well Together?
My own Netflix set-up is fairly simple: games for extra value, autoplay previews off, subtitles adjusted, Smart Downloads ready for travel and a quick device check every few months. You do not need to change every setting to make the service feel better.
For a shared household
Give each person a separate profile, add a PIN where needed, then review Manage Access and Devices every few months.
For regular travellers
Turn on Download Next Episode, keep downloads on Wi-Fi only and check expiry dates before leaving home.
For better recommendations
Remove abandoned titles, rate programmes honestly and keep other people's viewing out of your profile.
For clearer dialogue
Customise subtitle appearance, search for audio description where useful and try a slightly slower playback speed.
For a calmer app
Disable preview autoplay and use My Netflix rather than repeatedly scrolling the home screen from the beginning.
For maximum value
Start with the games catalogue. I would try Red Dead Redemption or Dead Cells before paying for a separate mobile game or another entertainment subscription.
Features can improve the experience, but they do not answer the bigger question of whether the subscription still suits your household. Our full Netflix review looks at the service as a whole, including value, plans, catalogue strengths and the compromises to consider.
04 Why a Netflix Feature Might Be Missing
Netflix does not look identical on every television, phone or account. A feature mentioned in this guide may be absent for a perfectly ordinary reason rather than because something is broken.
- Your app needs updating: Older app versions may not show newer controls such as Continue Watching removal or mobile interface changes.
- Your plan has a restriction: Smart Downloads is unavailable on the ad-supported plan, and some browser features also differ on that plan.
- The device does not support it: Playback speed, subtitle styling and games depend on the hardware and viewing method.
- The feature is rolling out: Netflix sometimes introduces layouts or discovery tools gradually, so two accounts may briefly look different.
- The profile is restricted: Kids profiles and profiles with lower maturity settings do not show every feature or game.
- The title has limited options: Audio description, dubs, downloads and Moments are not available for every programme.
Do not rely on a menu path staying identical forever
Netflix regularly changes its navigation. The feature names usually remain recognisable, but the route may move between the profile menu, My Netflix, App Settings and the web Account page.
05 Frequently Asked Questions
Can I turn off Netflix preview autoplay?
Yes. Open Manage Profiles, select the profile and switch off Autoplay Previews. It is a profile-level setting, so repeat the change for any other profiles that need it.
Does Netflix include games in the monthly price?
Yes. Netflix currently lists more than 120 mobile games included with membership, with no adverts, extra fees or in-app purchases. My current picks are Red Dead Redemption, Dead Cells: Netflix Edition, Storyteller and Football Manager 26 Mobile. Availability still depends on the device, profile maturity rating and region.
Can I see who is using my Netflix account?
You can see recently active devices through Manage Access and Devices, including device information, the latest profile used and recent activity. Netflix notes that a device can take time to appear, so the list is not always immediate.
Can I delete something from my Netflix viewing history?
You can hide titles through Viewing activity on the Account page. You can also remove a title directly from Continue Watching on supported current apps.
Can I transfer my Netflix profile to another account?
Eligible profiles can be transferred to a new account, an existing account or certain extra-member slots. The transfer can include recommendations, viewing history, My List, settings and supported game data.
Why is Smart Downloads missing?
Smart Downloads is a mobile feature and is not available on Netflix's ad-supported plan. It may also be missing when the app or device does not support downloads.
What are Netflix Moments?
Moments are short clips of supported Netflix scenes that can be saved, replayed and shared from the mobile app. They cannot be created from live events, trailers, downloaded titles or games.
