HBO Max finally feels like the version UK viewers should have had years ago. I have been subscribed since launch in the UK, after previously using a US/VPN-era setup to keep up with HBO shows, and the official app now feels far less fiddly. The quality is genuinely excellent: House of the Dragon pulls me back every week, Euphoria still matters to me because I have followed it since season one, and Game of Thrones still has enough emotional pull that Daenerys on the home screen stopped me scrolling.

Why I Keep It

Main Problem
The new-release rhythm can feel thin. The catalogue quality is very high, but there are still stretches where I open the app, admire the library, and realise there is not much brand-new that demands immediate viewing.

Is HBO Max Premium 4K Worth It?
Worth it if HBO is your serious TV night app
Premium makes the most sense if you watch on a larger TV and care about fantasy, cinema and darker prestige drama looking as good as possible. House of the Dragon, Game of Thrones, Dune-style films and Warner Bros. releases are exactly the sort of content where 4K and better audio matter.
I would not pay extra for Premium just to casually browse. The upgrade makes sense when HBO Max is one of your main living-room apps rather than a background streamer.
My practical verdict: Standard is enough for many people, but Premium is the plan I would look at for a proper 4K TV setup and weekly House of the Dragon nights.

Episode 1 Felt Like the War Finally Arrived
The opener hooked me because it did not feel like another hour of people simply moving pieces around a map. The Battle of the Gullet gave the season immediate scale: smoke over the water, dragons cutting through the chaos, ships burning, and that horrible feeling that nobody was really in control once the fighting started.
What stayed with me was the panic around Jace and Vermax. It had that classic Thrones feeling where you know something terrible is coming, but the show makes you sit in the dread anyway. That is exactly the kind of premium, expensive-looking television that makes HBO Max feel different from a regular background app.
Episode 2 Turned Spectacle Into Consequence
The second episode worked for me because it slowed the noise down and made the aftermath political and personal. Rhaenyra and Daemon entering King's Landing, the Gold Cloaks shifting the balance of the room, and Rhaenyra finally sitting the Iron Throne all felt like a proper turning point rather than just another claim being shouted across a table.
The Otto Hightower moment was the part that made it feel like real damage had been done. It was not just a victory lap for Team Black; Alicent and Helaena being caught in the wreckage made the whole takeover feel uncomfortable, messy and very HBO. That is why House of the Dragon draws me back weekly instead of becoming something I leave for a later binge.
The Weekly Habit Matters
This is the kind of show I want to watch week by week, talk about afterwards, and then check the app again before the next Sunday. When House of the Dragon is running, HBO Max has a clear purpose in my household. When it is not, the service can feel much quieter, which is why the wider release rhythm still matters.
