What’s Different About the New Hogwarts Castle?

HBO is taking us back to Hogwarts, but the school has a fresh look. Here’s what the new poster and trailers actually reveal, and what’s still a mystery.

The new Hogwarts Castle is a redesign, not a copy of the film version. A promotional image released on 29 October 2026 offers a glimpse of its towers reflected in Harry Potter’s glasses. The trailers reveal more of the school inside, including a grand Entrance Hall, a light-filled greenhouse and a cosy Gryffindor common room. The full exterior layout is still largely under wraps.

That means we can spot a new look, but we cannot honestly say exactly which tower has moved or how every courtyard connects. The official HBO series guide and poster are the best starting point.

Does the new Hogwarts Castle look different outside?

Yes, but only part of it is visible. The October poster puts the castle inside the reflection of Harry’s round glasses. You can make out an illuminated outline of towers and rooftops, not a detailed architectural plan. Some fans see a familiar silhouette, while others think the tower arrangement looks quite different from the films.

Original films, 2001 to 2011

A familiar castle that kept evolving

Production designer Stuart Craig drew inspiration from British universities and Gothic architecture. The design was updated during the eight films as the story called for new spaces, so there is no single, unchanged film layout.

HBO series, 2026

A newly designed castle, with recognisable landmarks

HBO has commissioned its own sets and visual world. The first outside glimpse is promising, but there is not yet enough footage to map the new towers, bridges and courtyards against the movie versions.

For the film design’s history, see the official behind-the-scenes feature. For the new image, see the October poster coverage.

What has changed inside Hogwarts?

The inside is where HBO has shown us the most. The official first teaser breakdown identifies three recognisable locations with new sets and details. These are fresh interpretations of familiar spaces, rather than proof that every room has changed in a particular way.

Seen in the teaser

The Entrance Hall

The new hall features intricate carved doors and a broad staircase. It’s a grand first impression, and the house emblems displayed here have also been redesigned.

Professor Sprout’s greenhouse

This version is bright, airy and packed with magical greenery. We have a clear sense of its atmosphere, even if the trailer does not show every corner.

Seen in the teaser

Gryffindor common room

Soft chairs and a lived-in feel make the room look like somewhere students could actually spend an evening, not just a backdrop for a scene.

House symbols and school identity

The house animals and colours remain, but the emblems have a new treatment. Uniforms also carry a simpler Hogwarts crest with a prominent H.

Why is HBO changing the castle?

The show’s creative team wants Hogwarts to feel like a real school that has grown over centuries. Director Mark Mylod has discussed architectural variety, including Georgian influences and a more naturalistic approach. He and showrunner Francesca Gardiner have also talked about opening up parts of Hogwarts the films had less time to visit, such as the staffroom.

More of Hogwarts, not a completely different school

The creators have said they want to keep major landmarks, including the Great Hall, recognisable while expanding the areas around them. See their official discussion of Hogwarts’ design.

The new series is being made at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden, where the original films were produced, with Mara LePere-Schloop credited as production designer. Sharing a studio does not mean HBO is reusing the films’ entire castle design.

In other words, the goal seems to be a more detailed Hogwarts we can spend longer exploring. That is also central to why HBO is rebooting Harry Potter as a television series.

What haven’t we seen yet?

There’s plenty left to discover. So far, the promotional material does not give us a reliable full-floor plan, a complete exterior fly-around, or detailed comparisons of the Great Hall and moving staircases.

2001 to 2011

The film castle becomes iconic

Different directors and new story needs led to changes in the original Hogwarts design across the eight movies.

2025 to September 2026

New sets appear in production photos and trailers

HBO shows the Quidditch surroundings, the Entrance Hall, the greenhouse and Gryffindor’s common room.

29 October 2026

The exterior makes its poster debut

The castle can be seen reflected in Harry’s glasses, but not yet in a full, clear landscape shot.

25 December 2026

The new Hogwarts opens to viewers

Season 1 premieres on HBO and HBO Max where available. That’s when we’ll get our best look at how the spaces fit together.

What to watch for next

A clear wide shot of the new castle, the arrival by boat, the Great Hall, and how corridors connect between lessons. Those will tell us much more than a single poster reflection.

In short

HBO has given Hogwarts a fresh design and new interiors, while keeping the place recognisable. The October poster hints at the new exterior. For now, the Entrance Hall, greenhouse and common room provide the clearest look at what has changed.

Frequently asked questions

Is HBO using the same Hogwarts Castle as the original films?

No. The production is creating its own version of Hogwarts, with new sets and visual design. The October 2026 poster offered a partial exterior glimpse, but it is not enough to compare every tower and courtyard.

Will the Great Hall be different in the new Harry Potter series?

The team has said it wants to preserve the feel of iconic places such as the Great Hall. It has not published a complete, room-by-room comparison with the film set.

What parts of the new Hogwarts have been shown?

The official teaser has shown the Entrance Hall, Professor Sprout’s greenhouse and the Gryffindor common room. It also reveals redesigned house symbols. An October 2026 poster shows part of the castle outside in Harry’s glasses.
