Is the New Harry Potter Series a Remake or a Different Story?
Same books, new cast and more time at Hogwarts. Here’s what HBO is keeping, what’s changing and why this isn’t Harry Potter 9.

The new Harry Potter series retells the original story. HBO is adapting J.K. Rowling’s seven novels again, starting with Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. It isn’t a sequel to the films, a story about Harry’s children or an adaptation of The Cursed Child.
The familiar plot is staying, but the production has a completely new main cast and a much longer television format. HBO calls it a faithful adaptation of the books. You can also read why HBO decided to reboot Harry Potter rather than make a new spin-off.
Same Harry Potter books, two screen adaptations
Think of the films and HBO’s series as different ways of bringing the same novels to screen. You don’t need the old movies to understand the new show.
The seven Harry Potter novels
Harry’s years at Hogwarts, his friendships and the conflict with Voldemort form the basis of both adaptations.
Eight theatrical films
Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson tell the story in a film series that often compresses or cuts scenes from the books.
HBO television series
Dominic McLaughlin, Alastair Stout and Arabella Stanton begin the same journey with a new production team, designs and episodic structure.
Why the format matters
Blocks show format, not relative running time. HBO has not published every episode length.
What will stay the same, and what will be different?
He receives his Hogwarts letter, discovers magic and meets Ron and Hermione. The first season follows the first book, rather than starting years after the films.
Dominic McLaughlin is Harry, Arabella Stanton is Hermione and Alastair Stout is Ron. John Lithgow plays Dumbledore, Nick Frost plays Hagrid and Paapa Essiedu plays Snape.
The TV format can spend longer at Hogwarts and follow supporting characters who had little or no screen time in the films. That is a creative opportunity, not proof that every deleted book scene will appear.
The new series does not overwrite the eight movies. Warner Bros. has said the original films remain part of the franchise and will continue to be available to watch.
The confirmed cast is listed in the official Harry Potter cast guide.
Will HBO add scenes that weren’t in the films?
It can, and there is already one clear example. The series has cast Peter Serafinowicz as Peeves, the disruptive Hogwarts poltergeist who was absent from the finished film series.
Peeves is joining the new Hogwarts
HBO is bringing Peeves into the story instead of leaving him out. He is one of the clearest signs that the series is revisiting the books rather than copying the movie scripts. The official casting announcement confirms his appearance.
Professor Binns is also on the confirmed cast list, with Richard Durden playing the ghostly History of Magic teacher. Binns didn’t appear in the original films. More time could also allow for fuller classroom scenes and secondary storylines, although a complete episode-by-episode list of changes has not been released.
HBO has promised the same underlying story, not identical dialogue, pacing or sets. New creative choices are inevitable, and the full extent of them will only be clear once the episodes arrive.
Does the new series carry on after Deathly Hallows?
No. It starts over with Harry at age eleven. HBO has described a long-term adaptation of the original books, and Season 2 is already being developed around Chamber of Secrets. There is no announced HBO sequel season set after Deathly Hallows.
The first season arrives on 25 December 2026 on HBO and HBO Max where available, including the UK. HBO Max says every plan includes the series, although the best picture and audio features depend on your subscription and device. Our HBO Max UK plans guide explains the options.

In short
It’s a remake in the broad sense, but more accurately a new book adaptation. Expect the same Harry Potter story with new actors, a fresh Hogwarts and the chance to explore parts of the books the films skipped.
Frequently asked questions
Is the HBO Harry Potter series a sequel to the movies?
No. It starts again with the first novel and a new cast. It is not Harry Potter 9 or a continuation of the original film timeline.
Will the original Harry Potter movies be replaced?
No. HBO’s adaptation is a separate screen version. Warner Bros. has said the original eight films will remain available around the world.
Do you need to watch the Harry Potter movies before the HBO series?
No. The show starts at the beginning of Harry’s story, so it is designed to make sense without watching the previous films.
