Will There Ever Be a Harry Potter Sequel?
Could Harry, Ron and Hermione return for another film? Here’s what has actually been announced, why a sequel already exists on stage and where the story could go next.
Is another Harry Potter sequel really possible?
Yes, another continuation is possible, but no ninth Harry Potter film or new sequel novel has been announced. The important distinction is that Harry’s story already continued in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, a stage play first performed in 2016. A film following the original eight movies would be a different project.
I can see why fans think it will happen eventually. The characters still have years of stories ahead of them. But the appetite for another film and a confirmed plan to make one are not the same thing.
A stage sequel exists. HBO is remaking the original books for television. There is no officially announced Harry Potter 9 movie, and Daniel Radcliffe has said he has no plans to return.
Three things people mean by a Harry Potter sequel
Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is officially described as the eighth story. It follows adult Harry and the next generation, particularly Albus Potter and Scorpius Malfoy.
This is what many fans really mean by “Harry Potter 9”. No studio announcement confirms a new movie reuniting Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint.
Rowling’s current FAQ says there will not be more Harry Potter books. She has also said elsewhere that she does not like ruling out every possible return to the wider world forever.
How Harry Potter’s story continued after the films
The original film series ends
Deathly Hallows: Part 2 closes the eight-film adaptation of the seven novels.
The Cursed Child opens
The stage story picks up 19 years after Voldemort’s defeat. It is a continuation, but it is not a ninth film.
Familiar film actors revisit their roles
Tom Felton returns to Draco Malfoy on Broadway. In August 2026, Rupert Grint announces that he will play adult Ron in the same show in 2027.
HBO begins a new adaptation
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone starts the new television version of the original books. It tells the story again rather than continuing it.
Could Harry Potter and the Cursed Child become a movie?
There is no announced film adaptation. In 2017, Rowling publicly dismissed rumours of a Cursed Child movie trilogy, saying the story had been created for the stage. That statement describes her plans at the time, not a guarantee that nothing can ever change.
The original cast is another question. Daniel Radcliffe told Parade in February 2026 that he treasured making the films but did not want to return to the role. No reunion with Emma Watson has been announced either.
Rupert Grint and Tom Felton have returned to their characters
Felton plays adult Draco on Broadway through January 2027. Grint is scheduled to play Ron from February to May 2027. It is real evidence of interest in revisiting the characters, but in theatre, not film.
There is no announced screenplay, cast or release date
Rowling’s earlier comments, Radcliffe’s position and HBO’s major television commitment are all reasons not to treat a film sequel as inevitable.
For now, Warner Bros. Discovery’s publicly confirmed screen project is the HBO Harry Potter reboot. HBO executives have also said they are concentrating on the book adaptation, not planning an immediate collection of TV spin-offs.
Will J.K. Rowling write another Harry Potter book?
That seems less likely in the near term than another story being told on stage. Rowling’s current FAQ says there will not be more Harry Potter books and points readers to The Cursed Child as the continuation of adult Harry’s story.
In another answer on her official Harry Potter pages, she explains why she has refused to say “never” about writing something more from that world. Those two remarks leave room for a future change of mind, but they are not an announcement or evidence of a book in progress.
Albus Potter, Scorpius Malfoy and their families already provide a way to tell stories beyond Hogwarts as Harry knew it. A different generation could carry a future continuation without asking the original films to repeat Voldemort’s rise.
Our prediction: will there ever be another sequel?
I think another story set after the original books is plausible eventually. The world remains popular, there is already an official stage continuation, and actors such as Grint and Felton have shown that returning to familiar roles is possible in the right circumstances.
But I would not predict a ninth film with the original trio any time soon. HBO has a lengthy retelling of the books underway, Radcliffe is not looking to return, and there is no confirmed film project to point to.
Another stage story, a new-generation story or a separate Wizarding World continuation, if there is a strong idea that earns its place.
A confirmed Cursed Child movie, an imminent ninth film, or a new novel from Rowling. None of those has been announced.
Fans are divided too. In a Harry Potter Reddit discussion, some wanted to see Harry’s adult years while others preferred the original ending to remain untouched. For me, the question is not simply whether the franchise can continue. It’s whether the next story has a reason to exist.

In short
A Harry Potter sequel already exists on stage, and another continuation is possible one day. What has not been confirmed is a ninth movie, an original-cast reunion or a new sequel novel. I’d keep an open mind, but not book cinema tickets on the strength of rumours.
Frequently asked questions
Is Harry Potter 9 officially confirmed?
No. As of 4 November 2026, there is no officially announced ninth film in the original Harry Potter series. HBO’s new television adaptation is a reboot, not Harry Potter 9.
Is The Cursed Child the official Harry Potter sequel?
Yes. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is officially called the eighth story. It follows adult Harry and the next generation, but it was written for the stage rather than released as a ninth film.
Will Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint return together?
No reunion has been announced. Radcliffe said in February 2026 that he had no plans to return to Harry Potter. Grint is returning as Ron on Broadway in 2027, which is a separate stage engagement.
