The History of Ali G: From Staines to HBO and His 2026 Comeback
From a spoof youth reporter to international TV, cinema and a debate about the limits of satire.
The story in brief
Ali G began as a fictional interviewer questioning real people with extraordinary confidence and very little understanding. From British late-night television, that simple setup grew into an international TV career and two feature films.
Who is Ali G?
Alistair Leslie Graham, better known as Ali G, is Sacha Baron Cohen’s fictional would-be spokesperson for street culture. He comes from Staines in Surrey and adopts the tracksuits and slang of a world he only partly understands. The gap between his self-image and his surroundings is the central joke.
He presents suburban Staines as an intimidating urban stronghold.
His exaggerated claims are at odds with where he comes from.

The difference between television and film
Real guests, improvised questions
Politicians, experts and other public figures respond to a fictional interviewer who refuses to make sense.
Actors, a script and political farce
The character enters a planned fictional plot involving the British government instead of relying on unsuspecting interviewees.
Reported worldwide box-office gross for Ali G Indahouse — cinema revenue, not profit.
How the interviews worked
The guests were real, but Ali G was a character. This is the format in four beats.
A serious guest
An expert sits down expecting an ordinary conversation.
An absurd question
Ali asks it with complete confidence.
A genuine reaction
The guest tries to answer, correct or redirect him.
The comic contrast
The audience sees the gap between them.
Beyond the interview chair
Madonna’s Music
Ali played the chauffeur in the music video, introducing the character to audiences far beyond television comedy.
A Harvard Class Day address
Baron Cohen appeared as Ali G before Harvard’s graduating class, carrying the act into a very different setting.
One show, three characters
Da Ali G Show also introduced two characters who later led their own feature films.
Borat
A fictional Kazakh reporter whose seemingly innocent questions probe other people’s assumptions.
Brüno
An Austrian fashion correspondent whose celebrity obsession and direct approach create discomfort.
Retirement and the 2026 comeback
Baron Cohen announced Ali G’s retirement in 2007, explaining that fame made undercover encounters harder. After occasional appearances, he returned with Ali G: Who Iz I?, a mockumentary-style film in which Ali travels to America.

Why Ali G remains controversial
The character is a white suburban man who imitates elements of Black British, Jamaican and American hip-hop culture. Viewers disagree about the target and effect of the satire.
The creator’s argument
Baron Cohen presents Ali as the fool: an overconfident cultural appropriator whose interviews can expose prejudice in others.
The criticism
The accents and stereotypes can reinforce the ideas the character is supposed to question, regardless of the intention.
The debate has followed the character from his original television run to his 2026 film.
