Who voiced K9?

John Leeson was the original and best-known voice of K9, the mechanical dog companion in Doctor Who. He first appeared in the 1977 story The Invisible Enemy with Tom Baker’s Fourth Doctor. Leeson gave the character a precise, recognisably robotic manner that still felt like a loyal companion.

John Leeson’s life beyond K9

A voice remembered across generations

He was still recording K9 for Big Finish audio adventures in recent years, demonstrating how far the role travelled beyond its 1977 debut.
Why K9’s voice still matters
John Leeson made a metal prop feel like a character with opinions, loyalty and humour. David Brierley also forms part of K9’s history, but it is Leeson’s performance that links the original Fourth Doctor stories to the robot dog’s later returns.
